Wars in various parts of the world, ongoing geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, changing governments, inflation concerns and volatile investment markets can make it seem as though the world is becoming increasingly unpredictable.
Many clients have understandably asked us the same question:
The short answer is: probably less than you think.
While world events often create short-term uncertainty, history has consistently shown that economies adapt, businesses evolve and investment markets eventually move forward. Every generation has experienced its own crises, whether wars, recessions, political upheaval, pandemics or financial crashes. Yet over time, people continue to work, businesses continue to trade and long-term investors continue to be rewarded for patience and discipline.
For most individuals and families, the focus should remain on the things that can actually be controlled:
From an employment perspective, uncertainty can sometimes place pressure on businesses and industries. This is why financial resilience is so important. Having savings, appropriate insurance and a sensible financial plan in place can make a significant difference should circumstances change unexpectedly.
From an investment perspective, volatility is a normal part of investing. Markets do not move in straight lines. Periods of uncertainty often create short-term declines, but they can also create opportunities for disciplined long-term investors. Trying to predict the next market move is extremely difficult. Remaining invested according to a well-considered strategy is often the most effective approach.
At pfire, we continue to monitor developments both locally and internationally and will keep you informed where necessary. More importantly, we remain focused on helping you make sound decisions based on your personal circumstances rather than reacting to daily headlines.
If current events have raised any concerns regarding your investments, retirement planning, estate planning or broader financial position, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Sometimes the greatest value of a financial plan is not what it does during calm times, but the confidence it provides during uncertain ones.

Mike Lombard Financial Services cc t/a Pfire is a registered independent Financial Services Provider (FSP 30256) founded in 2007 by Mike Lombard. It is a fee based practice offering a range of bundled services to individuals and businesses.
An individual’s financial and business planning needs are interconnected and each part impacts in some way on to whole. This includes technical and regulatory information and expertise, emotional issues as well as logical matters that are considered as critical to outcomes.
Together with our clients, we solve problems and co-design solutions by asking three simple questions:-
- Where are you now
- Where do you want to be?
- How do you get there?
We hold ourselves to the highest ethical and professional standards through our accreditation with the Financial Planning Institute of South.
No one knows their personal and private circumstances better than our clients themselves. That is why we understand that planning in any form is very personal and emotional. Technical solutions count for little if problems are not identified and solved together. Co-designing solutions is at the core of planning offered by Pfire and requires an intimate partnership where trust, transparency and empathy are pivotal.
The beauty of collaboration is that it combines knowledge and wisdom offering better opportunities to embrace outcomes
